Dealing With Negativity: What’s Your Perspective?

One day, a friend shared an interesting comment. “It’s just a hobby,” says my friend. My friend was referring Inspiration Point. “How so?”, I asked. The response was hardly pleasant or encouraging.

Sadly, I’ve had similar conversations with this person. He simply doesn’t see the value of the work done on this blog. How shall I respond to such negativity? I can’t control what someone chooses to think or believe. However, I can do something about my own responses.

I could choose from one of three options. Though there may be others; I will focus on three types of responses. Shall I play “The Victim”? Shall I take on the role of “The Reporter”? How about a “Hope Filled” view of the situation?

The Victim’s view: I could readily agree with my friend’s negative comments. If so, I wouldn’t see any value in sharing my stories. I’d see myself, as a prisoner of the past and statistics. Then again, I could go in the exact opposite direction of what I write.

Is anyone encouraged by my complaining about my circumstances? Do I help anyone by ripping other people apart? How is God glorified by waving an angry fist or having a pity party? How does this help, anyone?

The Reporter’s view: A reporter would look at my situation in an emotionally detached and objective manner. They would not look at the possibilities, just the facts. They would see my disabilities and they’d declare my future, hopeless.

Do you think I’m exaggerating? Try reading Anniversary of American with Disabilities Act – July 26th.  It’s an article I found on Google. The report paints a statistically poor picture for anyone with disabilities. Hey, it’s just the facts!

The Hope Filled view: This perspective is not limited by what it sees. It doesn’t ignore the facts; however, hope looks for the potential for positive changes. It also says, “I am not a prisoner of my past or statistics.”

My hope for change isn’t based upon my limited strength. Though I am thankful for our government; my hope for change isn’t based on what the government can do. It’s based on who my Heavenly Father is and what He can do.

Did you know God is a HOPER? Go Romans 15:13:

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
